What you’ll make:
During this three-hour workshop, by candlelight, you’ll create a small family of spherical pots using the kurinuki method — a Japanese hand-building technique that involves carving and scooping clay from a solid form.
Your finished pieces will be:
Fired in stoneware clay
Frost-resistant
Perfectly imperfect, each one uniquely yours
After firing, your vessels will be ready for you to forage, arrange, and care for your own miniature moss garden at home.
What is kurinuki?
Kurinuki translates loosely as “to scoop out.”
Rather than building up clay, we begin with a solid form and carve into it, working slowly and intuitively.
This method naturally encourages:
A meditative pace
Deep focus and presence
Acceptance of irregularity and texture
No two pieces are ever the same — and that’s part of the beauty.
What to expect
A 3-hour guided session in a relaxed, supportive environment
Gentle instruction suitable for beginners and experienced makers alike
All tools, materials, and firings included
Cacao or tea and quiet moments built into the session
You don’t need any prior pottery experience — just a willingness to slow down and work with your hands.
After the workshop
Your pieces will be carefully dried, fired, and finished for you.
You’ll be able to collect your vessels approximately four weeks later, fully fired and ready to take home. At that point, you can begin foraging and preparing moss for your finished pieces (guidance provided).
